He has conducted comprehensive air dispersion analyses for a diverse range of clients—from single industrial facilities to entire cities—helping them navigate environmental regulations and improve air quality.

Leadership & Industry Impact

Bill has worked for large multi-national firms as well as small boutique shops. He has served on the Board of Directors of an environmental consulting firm as well as an international environmental trade organization and has established and grown overseas offices for consulting firms.  Bill’s expertise ensures that every project BSM undertakes benefits from technical rigor and innovative solutions.

Personal & Interests

Bill lives in Maryland with his wife and two youngest children (his oldest has flown the nest and is on her own).  In addition to his lifelong passion for weather, he enjoys coaching his kids’ softball and baseball teams, giving weather and air pollution talks to local schools, working in his yard and on his house (ask him about the home theater he built), singing, the music of Frank Sinatra, and backpacking. 

Bret Anderson

PRINCIPAL, Blue Sky Modeling

Bret has over 30 years of experience in meteorological and air dispersion modeling for state and federal air quality agencies.  He has conducted air modeling analyses for a wide range of industries for construction permitting and state implementation plan development.  Bret has considerable meteorological and photochemical modeling experience, having conducted numerous source specific photochemical model applications for regional haze BART determinations as well as attainment demonstrations for major metropolitan areas in the United States.

A native Nebraskan, Bret experiences a seasonal dip in morale each October with the midseason decline of his beloved Huskers. He is also an avid storm chaser and a scuba diving enthusiast.

Leadership & Committee Involvement

Bret was a member of the AMS/EPA Model Improvement Committee (AERMIC), the committee responsible for the development and promulgation of the AERMOD model. He was also co-chair of the Interagency Workgroup on Air Quality Modeling (IWAQM), which oversaw the promulgation of CALPUFF as an EPA-approved model. Additionally, Bret contributed to the Guideline on Air Quality Models and the Federal Land Managers’ Air Quality Related Values Workgroup Phase I report.

Teaching & Advisory Roles

Bret served as the co-chair of the Fire Weather Working Group for the Interagency Coordination for the Advancement of Meteorological Services (ICAMS). He has taught numerous meteorology and modeling courses, including boundary layer meteorology and tactical fire weather forecasting for the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Bret has also served as an Air Resource Advisor for the Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program.
